Sculptures in Stone and Metal

Ian Startup
Originally trained as a Civil Engineer Technician, I began making jewelry and objects from silver and gold in 1970. This work was sold through craft shops and at craft shows until I began Startup Construction, in 1983. I renovated over 100 homes on Nova Scotia's South Shore, many of them over 100 years old. Also I designed and built new homes, three of which won design awards from the Nova Scotia Department of Housing. I've also designed and built a line of wooden bathtubs and shower bases, as well as many special features for homes.

Startup Construction closed in 1990 when Margo, my partner in life, decided to return to Holland, her homeland, to study Naturopathic Medicine. While living in Holland, I discovered marble. Since my first visit to Italy in October 1992 I've been working almost exclusively as a sculptor. Most works are in marble and a few in granite, wood, silver and gold. I'm still actively working in home design and construction but only for very special projects.

Most recent activities include four weeks at Studio Palla in Peitrasanta, Italy where I executed the Millennium Gateway" and 3 1/2 weeks on Baffin Island in Iqaluit where I executed "Listener of Sad Stories".
